Illustration Friday: Night

I finally got around to doing an entry for Illustration Friday. This week's theme is Night, and so I thought I'd depict a moment one night when Ava actually got up on her own and went to the potty. See, she's the heavy sleeper type. She sleeps like a log and it's very hard to wake her at times. So imagine our surprise when we hear Ava's sweet little voice call out from the hallway, announcing her next venture. Andrea and I were a bit spooked by hearing her voice at such a late hour because our initial thought was that something's terribly wrong -- this was such an unusual situation. But thankfully, it was a false alarm -- just a trip to the loo in the middle of the night..

And yes, that's me with a beard. I'm trying to grow one right now. It itches like the dickens.

  4. that is definitely something to remember. I remember when my son started using the potty at night. The first time, he got up, walked into the kitchen, and 'used' the floor, turned around and went back to bed. He was only a room off ;)

  6. A nice piece, Ward...as always your Ava anecdotes ( and depiction of her ) bring a smile and fond memories of similar scenes for us parents - thanx! :-)

  9. Love the illustration, like the light coming from the bathroom and the posture of your daughter, she still looks half asleep. My daughter has started singing in her sleep, we get woken at 2 in the morning with a rendition of 'wheels on the bus'.

  14. Wow, this is one of the best illustrations I've seen from you, Ward, well done. I agree with Courtney - the composition is really great. It tells a story in single frame regardless of the text. The computer screen glow is alive and obvlous without being distracting.

  15. Thank you all, for the great comments! It's nice to see some new faces around these parts. I do hope you come back again soon. I have fun here.

Kim Carney, that's a very funny story. My mom recalls one night I went to the bathroom (it was directly next to my parent's bedroom and they could look right into where the toilet was) and I turned around and actually waved to my mom and said 'hey,' before I did my duty. The next day I did not remember anything AT ALL. Sometimes I think to this day that she's making that story up.

Lili, I'm glad you discovered me. Hope you snoop around and enjoy yourself.

I'm happy to see you all take advantage of checking out my stuff on Flickr. It's like a 'special edition' Ward-O-Matic, where you'll see some extra goodies that you wouldn't see here on the blog. (But will soon.)

Thank you, Megan, for your words. And I'm glad that this illo was good enough for you to 'come out' of the blurking closet! It's nice to meet you.

In fact, it's very nice to meet you all. Hopefully we can meet in person one day.

    Thanks again, guys!

  16. Cool illustration and she's so cute. You did a great job making her look all sleepy. Thanks for sharing the story too, it's always fascinating to read how artists arrive at their iFri soulutions.

  20. Apparently I used to sleepwalk, I would carry on a full conversation with my parents and then my mom would tell me to go to bed, and I would, but not recall a thing in the morning. I could also tell you some horrifying incidents from when my brother was little, including peeing down the stairs, in the bathtub, and all the way down the stairs in the kitchen garbage...ew.
