Moleskine fun

I've received my first Moleskine recently, and I'm a new convert. I love the thing. What is it about a nice compact little sketchbook that can take watercolor and goauche and acrylics without buckling the paper to no end? There's something about the convenience of the little 5x7 blackbook that actually makes me want to take it everywhere I go and record everything I see. Within my constrained little world that's a big thing. Oh, and you gotta love the nice elastic binding that keeps all the pages intact.

So here is an experiment -- just trying something out, with india ink and gouache, seeing what works or not. (Click on the image for a closer look.)

And with all things that have a following, there's a Moleskine blog called Moleskinerie, with the accompanying Moleskine Flickr group.

  3. I joined the cult of Moleskine a few months ago with one of the little 4x6 pocket notebooks. You're so right man, there's just something about it that makes you want to use it. And that clever little pocket is so stinkin' handy. Reminds me of when I used to use a Newton PDA... Being organized was actually fun!

  4. That's great! I've always been tempted to jump on the Moleskin-bandwagon, but I've always been hesitant to start "another sketchbook" without giving my other 32 the proper attention. I've seen some really cool Moleskins that have pre-printed storyboard panels too. Ooooooo...

  5. Hello Ward!
Wonderful! The gouache with line work gives this a great 'Ben Shahn' feel. Makes us want to get some of those moleskins too...

We also love Ava's "booboo" drawing. Thanks for sharing it!

  6. She's adorable! She looks so happy with her book.

I got a moleskin notebook not long ago too. It's beautiful, I love carrying it around. And it's so small and so easy to just make little doodles at the bus stop.

  8. Hey Clio, yeah, the paper is kinda smooth -- there is no real watercolor papery "tooth" it -- but the paper is tough and doesn't buckle that much at all. In fact, with the "elastic enclosure" the entire thing can be kept together, without the pages getting out of hand.

The paper will buckle at first when it's wet, but then settles when the paper dries.

I forgot to mention that you can buy these at Borders and Barnes & Noble bookstores, where I got mine. (Andrea has one, too!)
